Health Portal - Built for All

The Purpose

To achieve an inclusively designed software that worked for our population of interest (people with low-literacy skills) and the mainstream population. We decided to design a health portal that patients can use to contact their doctor and access their medical information.

The Quest

As a team we first asked some pertinent questions about our target population and their interactions with technology. We gathered information about our target from a variety of trustworthy sources.

Then we created an affinity diagram for all the pertinent information that we found. We derived the persona attributes from the affinity diagram. These attributes are:

  • Literacy perception
  • Literacy capabilities
  • Information foragin capabilities
  • Interaction with healthcare systems
  • Understanding of risk
  • Socioeconomic status

These attributes were used to create a personas skeletons that we used to then developed a personas foundational document. The personas were then used to create a health portal prototype called MedInfo. While going through the process of developing the prototype, I drew concept sketches for the different attributes:

The Solution

These are the personas we developed for our target and mainstream populations.

Each of our populations had a use case for the health portal.

Target Population Use Case: Alexander needs to make an appointment to see his doctor because he has extreme back pain that is causing him to struggle at work. This use case results in the same UI for each population. Mainstream Population Use Case: Alexandria needs to refill a prescription for a chronic problem. This use case results in the same UI for each population.
